Community smoking behavior remains a serious challenge in efforts to maintain health. Despite preventive and control measures, smoking prevalence remains high, affecting various age groups and levels of society. The long-term health impacts of smoking habits, such as increased risk of heart disease, cancer and respiratory problems, indicate the urgency of increasing prevention efforts, education and stricter regulations related to tobacco. Despite a number of anti-tobacco policies, challenges continue to exist in changing cultural norms regarding smoking, increasing awareness of the associated health risks, and encouraging behavioral change towards healthy lifestyles. Policies from the regional government have also been prepared regarding cigarettes, one of which is Lampung Province Regional Regulation Number 8 of 2017 concerning Smoke-Free Areas.
In 2023, the recorded percentage of the population aged 5 years and over who smoked tobacco every day during the last month was 26.49 percent and smoked not every day at 1.52 percent. This percentage has increased compared to the previous year. In 2022, 25.73 percent of the population aged 5 years and over will smoke every day and 1.68 percent will smoke not every day. If we look at the average number of cigarettes smoked per week in 2023, there will be 94.05 cigarettes smoked by smokers in Lampung Province. This figure has increased compared to 2022, namely 87.01 cigarettes per week.
